Sergei Rachmaninoff parts from Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom
Rodion Shchedrin The Sealed Angel
Netherlands Chamber Choir (Nederlands Kamerkoor)
Peter Dijkstra chief conductor
Ana de la Vega flute
The Sealed Angel is a monumental choral work by the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin in the style of traditional choral singing of the Russian Orthodox Church. The composer was inspired by the novel The Sealed Angel by the Russian writer Nikolai Leskov, about villagers who protect a sealed icon from the grasping hands of the rulers. In Shchedrin’s musical version, impressive choral sounds are accompanied by and alternated with a flute part that is as virtuosic as it is moving. For this project the choir is collaborating with star flautist Ana de la Vega, who dominated the classical charts worldwide in 2018 with her debut album.
“an unmistakable atmosphere of long robes and incense-drenched vaults”
The Sealed Angel is the latest project in a series of choral works from the Russian Orthodox tradition which chief conductor Peter Dijkstra and the Netherlands Chamber Choir are bringing to the concert halls. The choir has previously performed Rachmaninoff’s Vespers and Schnittke’s Concert for Choir – great choral works which, just like Shchedrin’s work, evoke an unmistakable atmosphere of long robes and incense-drenched vaults.
