Having attracted sold-out theatres in Naples, Berlin and Paris, this opera project The 7 Deaths of Maria Callas will enjoy its Dutch premiere exclusively in Koninklijk Theater Carré on four nights. This opera is a performance with live music by internationally renowned sopranos. The orchestra’s conductor is Yoel Gamzou. Abramovic herself will both be present live and also together with actor Willem Dafoe on-screen.
At the intersection of opera, performance and video art, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas pays tribute to the legacy of Greek-American soprano Maria Callas. Seven of her death scenes from her most iconic roles, including Tosca, Carmen and Madame Butterfly, are reinterpreted. The “final” death belongs to Callas herself.
7 Deaths of Maria Callas premiered in 2020 at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and subsequently travelled to the Opéra National de Paris, the Greek National Opera in Athens, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Real Teatro San Carlo in Naples. The music heard is alternately Marko Nikodijević’s brand-new, avant-garde score, for orchestra and choir, and, on the other hand, arias from existing operas, from Puccini to Verdi. The contribution of the Netherlands Chamber Choir / NKK NXT in the performance lies in performing the work of Marko Nikodijević.
