In this programme the Netherlands Chamber Choir performs works by Bach, De Leeuw and Pärt – composers who, each in their own way, seek a musical connection with a higher power. Under the direction of chief conductor Peter Dijkstra, the choir explores these apparent extremes in choral music, linking three very distinct musical styles, driven by a common motivation: to express the mystical in music.
Bach’s motets are regarded as the pinnacle of Western vocal music, and are a wonderful counterpart to Pärt’s tranquil Baltic sounds.
Bach’s motets are regarded as the pinnacle of Western vocal music, and with their musical expressivity and technical complexity they are a wonderful counterpart to Pärt’s tranquil Baltic sounds. At the heart of the programme is Ton de Leeuw’s Car nos vignes sont en fleurs (For our vines are in blossom), a twelve-part work by one of the most prominent Dutch composers of the 20th century, which is certainly one of the highlights of Dutch choral music.
