Netherlands Chamber Choir (Nederlands Kamerkoor)
Paul Van Nevel conductor

Paul Van Nevel, master of Early Music, has been a much sought-after guest conductor with the Nederlands Kamerkoor for years, and with good reason. In 2022 he will present a programme based entirely on one of the forerunners of the modern Western scale: the hexachord ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la, which formed the basis of countless compositions in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Throughout the Renaissance, music teaching and vocal education were also founded on the hexachord. With DoReMiFaSol Paul Van Nevel demonstrates the limitlessness of limitation: the programme consists exclusively of works in which the hexachord features.

With the imposing Missa ut re mi fa sol la by Antoine Brumel as the basis, Van Nevel has put together a programme in which the Nederlands Kamerkoor examines chansons, motets, fantasias and medieval solfeggio exercises that would trip up even Boulez. Spectators will no doubt return home with a mammoth hexachord earworm, but one thing is certain: with dizzying rhythmic motifs, hexachord mutations and voice changes, there is plenty of variety in these six notes.
