Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts Schumanns masterful Szenen aus Goethes ‘Faust’. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Gardiner will be complemented by stars like Christian Gerhaher and Ann Hallenberg, in addition to two mixed choirs and a youth choir.
John Gardiner is above all specialised in Baroque music, but also presents a refreshing view on repertoire from the Romantic era. Szenen aus Goethes ‘Faust’ is one of the highlights in Schumann’s oeuvre. After he had proven himself as a Lied composer, he tried his hand at a composition for an enormous amount of musicians. As a subject he chose Goethe’s dramatic text describing a scientist’s contract with the devil. Goethe himself had thought that only Mozart would be able to compose music to this text – making the challenge for Schumann all the better. The result is as masterfully written as it is compelling.
