Try-out – Uitverkocht
The renowned Nederlands Kamerkoor and the anarchistic Warme Winkel join forces to present musical theatre on a grand scale, based around the prince and composer Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613). Gesualdo led a controversial life in his palaces in Southern Italy. He wrote divine music that was way ahead of its time. On the other hand, the wildest tales are told of him. For instance, the story goes that he had an entire forest felled because the rustling of the trees disturbed him while he was composing, but he also murdered his wife and her lover after he had discovered their adultery. He tortured animals, had his staff flog him, suffered from depression, and had a witch for a mistress. In short, a man of extremes.
Similarly, in their collaboration, the Warme Winkel and the Nederlands Kamerkoor appear to be poles apart. That in itself guarantees that this will be one of the most talked-about productions of 2018. The contrast between the choir and the theatre group, amidst Gesualdo’s perverse excrescences and his lucid music, is the driving force behind a quest for ‘the sublime’: that which is repulsive and yet irresistible.
