The Nederlands Kamerkoor and Amsterdam Sinfonietta are joining forces again to reprise In memoriam, with which they toured the Netherlands and South America to such great acclaim in 2017. The music of In memoriam is not only about raw pain and intense sadness, but also about eternal life and a hopeful look ahead. Arvo Pärt, for example, wrote his stirring prayer for peace Da pacem Domine in memory of the victims of the Madrid terrorist attacks, and Bach created a timeless high point in violin repertoire with his Chaconne, written after his first wife died. Dmitri Shostakovich, totally mangled by the communist system, hunted by Stalin and suffering from severe depression, wrote a requiem for himself and all other victims of fascism and war worldwide. Fauré, in turn, saw death not as an ending but rather as the beginning of a new journey. His moving and intimate Requiem is above all an ode to what is to come: ad vitam aeternam, towards eternal life.
