The Nederlands Kamerkoor and Raschèr Saxophone Quartet perform the world première of 72 angels by New York composer Lera Auerbach: one of the biggest young composers of this moment.
72 angels is a set of 72 Chorale preludes for mixed choir and saxophone quartet. Each prelude sets one of the 72 angel names as expressed through the mystical interpretation of Exodus 14:19-21. It is said that G-d opened the red seas upon Moses’ invocation of the “explicit name”composed of 72 letter triads that comprise the Shemhamphorasch. Throughout human history we have searched for connection. This work is an exploration of the linkage between the spiritual and human conditions.
Each of the world’s religions has its forms of spiritual guides or messengers, whether they are the angels of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, the deva in Hinduism, or the Fravashi in Zoroastrianism. 72 angels is a sacred musical meditation where each listener and performer can embrace his or her own interpretation.
The American Lera Auerbach (1973) is a composer and visual artist. Almost heedlessly, she combines folkloric melodies with a classical composition style. Compositions that are easy to listen to, but that never sound kitsch. 72 angels is a pinnacle; it is the culmination of years of her work. The Nederlands Kamerkoor and four heavenly saxophones of the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet perform the world première, which we eagerly await.
