Composer and conductor Matthias Pintscher is leading the Concertgebouworkest and the Nederlands Kamerkoor in a performance of both the Dutch premiere of his own work, as well as a performance of Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin. Bartók’s work, originally a pantomime performance, was considered so scandalous that it got banned immediately after the premiere in 1926. Later performances were limited to a concert version without mime. Now, the Miraculous Mandarin returns to its original form, with a pantomime realisation by Duda Paiva. In Shirim, Pintscher was inspired by what he considers to be ‘the most beautiful love poems ever written’: the Song of Songs. He added a new movement with choir to this cycle for baritone and orchestra in 2019, which is now being given its Dutch premiere.
