The martyrdom of Christ, so masterly put to music in Liszt’s Via Crucis, ends in Gubaidulina’s white world of snow and cold. Where do we end up, in heaven of in hell? Reinbert de Leeuw leads the Nederlands Kamerkoor and Asko|Schönberg through two of his favourite pieces.

For decades, conductor and pianist Reinbert de Leeuw (1938) has been fascinated by the later works of Liszt, especially Via Crucis. In 1986 he recorded the work with the Nederlands Kamerkoor, a recording rewarded with an Edison. His recording for violin and piano came out in 2013 and won an Edison. “Reinbert de Leeuw gives every single note an enormous expressiveness. Composition, sound, interpretation and concentration form a sublime unity. That is true virtuosity”, according to the jury report.
