Rockit Take-off with Kika Sprangers
Kika Sprangers is creating an ambitious composition titled The Way Wild Rivers Flow for the North Sea Jazz Composition Commission, in collaboration with the Netherlands Chamber Choir. In this work, she combines a mixed choir with a jazz rhythm section, enriched by saxophone and trumpet. Building on her previous experience with choral compositions, she places the emotional power of the human voice at the heart of the piece.
The work will receive its first performance in Groningen during the Rockit Take-off at De Oosterpoort.
The music of Kika Sprangers (1994) is a refined blend of jazz and classical influences. The saxophonist and composer combines the lyrical character of her instrument with a fascination for the human voice, which plays a central role in her work. Her compositions are characterized by recognizable riffs, melodic lines, rhythmic variety, and strong dramatic arcs. Sprangers graduated from the Utrecht Conservatory in 2016 with distinction (a grade of 9) and has since established herself as a prominent figure in the Dutch music scene.
Sprangers seeks a balance between freedom and structure, writing music for specific musicians and drawing inspiration from greats such as Avishai Cohen and Maria Schneider. The result is a cohesive whole that allows space for both improvisation and personal expression.
For this composition, Sprangers collaborates not only with the twelve vocalists of the Netherlands Chamber Choir but also with an ensemble featuring Alistair Payne (trumpet), Reinier Baas (guitar), Tijs Klaassen (double bass), and Jonas Burgwinkel (drums).
