Program
Igor Stravinsky Four Norwegian Moods
Kurt Weill Der Silbersee (concert version)
H de Smet
Conductor Iván Fischer leads works by Stravinsky, including the colorful ballet music The Firebird, and Kurt Weill’s rarely performed comic ‘winter’s tale’ Der Silbersee.
Iván Fischer is one of the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s favorite guest conductors, and Stravinsky is one of Fischer’s favorite composers. The beauty of a Stravinsky program is the sheer variety of music you get to experience. This utterly unique composer lived and worked in Imperial Russia, France, and modern-day America, with a style that evolved as often as he moved. His famous breakthrough work, The Firebird, is a quintessentially Russian fairytale ballet filled with vivid colors and rhythms. Alongside it, we hear the graceful Neoclassical music Stravinsky wrote in Hollywood during the Second World War.
A special highlight is Kurt Weill’s ‘winter’s tale’ Der Silbersee. This cheerful opera is rarely performed, despite the infectious melodies at which Weill always excelled. The work was banned by the Nazis due to its socially critical message, and later performances were often hindered by the high demands placed on both singers and actors. This is a wonderful opportunity to dive into a true musical gem
