Vespers van de Toendra

Vast bleak snow plains. Thin and then stirring voices. Whispering, magical murmuring and ominous growling... Vigilia by the Finnish composer Rautavaara is less well known but at least as beautiful as the Vespers by Rachmaninov. It is a beautiful, dark choral work, inspired by experiences from Rautavaara's youth when he visited a Byzantine monastery.

Both seasoned choir lovers and new visitors will be delighted by this Finnish-tinged programme by the Netherlands Chamber Choir. It certainly falls into the category of ‘monumental choral works’. After the sensational performances of major Russian-oriented choral works such as Rachmaninov’s Vespers and Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Choir, chief conductor Peter Dijkstra is now pulling out all the stops in a performance of this Finnish counterpart.
