Rob Zuidam The Great Alone (world premiere 25 September 2026)
Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur Le Cantique des Cantiques

With Daniel-Lesur’s Le Cantique des Cantiques, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, led by Swedish conductor Sofi Jeannin, performs one of the true masterpieces of music. It is based on the biblical Song of Songs, in which a man and a woman sing of their love and desire, praising one another’s beauty. This timeless work is not about a narrative, but about the interplay of longing and fulfillment, distance and reunion.
The program opens with The Great Alone, a major new choral work specially commissioned for tonight by Dutch composer Rob Zuidam. Drawing on diverse sources, he explores the sensation of profound cosmic loneliness—captured by Fermi’s famous question, ‘But where is everybody?’. An evening that takes you from the vastest solitude to the celebration of symbiotic love between two people.
