Cantique des Cantiques

Cantique des Cantiques

A concert of intense connection and mysterious emptiness

With Le Cantique des Cantiques by the 20th-century French composer Daniel-Lesur, the Netherlands Chamber Choir presents one of the masterpieces of choral literature. Based on the biblical Song of Songs, in which a man and a woman sing of their love and desire while praising each other’s beauty, Daniel-Lesur composed a thoroughly sensuous interplay of longing and fulfillment.

Distance and reunion are also central to The Great Alone, a brand-new choral work by Dutch composer Rob Zuidam. He drew inspiration from the fascinating Fermi paradox: if the universe is so vast and full of potentially habitable planets, why haven't we found extraterrestrial life yet? Or, as physicist Enrico Fermi put it: “But where is everybody?”

The two works are linked by Sven-David Sandström's Four Songs of Love. In this piece, the Swedish composer brings to life every facet of love: from devout and spiritual to tender and vulnerable.

Cantique des Cantiques is supported by the Dutch Performing Arts Fund (Fonds Podiumkunsten) and Fonds Sluyterman van Loo.

Singing Circles

Around Cantique des Cantiques, we are organizing Singing Circles and group concert visits for older adults (70+), in collaboration with Singing in Healthcare (Zingen in de Zorg). Because singing together means living together in connection.

The concert program poses an existential question about cosmic void: “Where is everybody?” With this context program, we offer a powerful answer together: ‘We are here. We hear each other.’ Connection doesn't come from perfection, but from breathing, listening, and experiencing together.

This context program consists of two parts: singing together during the Singing Circles and listening together at the Netherlands Chamber Choir concert.

We are organizing Singing Circles in four locations: The Hague, Amersfoort, Enschede, and Utrecht. View all information and sign up via the button below.
